Understanding the Brief

Metric was developed as part of our college IDP module, where our elective focused on Design for Sports. The brief required us to work across disciplines and build a concept that combined design, research, and real world application. As a team (Vineet Pande, Product Design & Sanjana Rajmohan, Interaction Design), we explored multiple directions before aligning on the idea of creating a sports training aid. Given the two week timeline and the requirement to deliver a working prototype, we narrowed our focus to a single sport. Basketball was chosen as it allowed us to design, prototype, and test a meaningful training solution within the given time frame, laying the foundation for our make believe startup, Metric.

Additionally, interviews conducted revealed that although the players train regularly, they basically used the coaches or depended on their own judgment.

Surveys conducted among the different levels showed that players mostly used little technology in practice, although they were interested in performance indicators. The results revealed the need for aids that provide simple feedback during practice.
