Problem Statement

Problem Statement

Most existing matcha packaging either relies on cluttered, health-driven visuals or adopts minimal premium aesthetics that feel cold and disconnected from its Japanese origins. This creates a gap for packaging that is visually fresh yet culturally grounded, balancing warmth, authenticity, and modern minimalism while remaining functional, sustainable, and engaging for today’s consumers. This project explores a design solution that bridges that gap through thoughtful form, material choice, and experience-driven packaging.

Current Market Landscape

Looking at existing matcha packaging, two common approaches stand out across the market. Some brands place a strong emphasis on health messaging, often resulting in designs that feel busy and information heavy.

Others lean towards clean, premium visuals that are minimal and refined but can come across as distant and impersonal. When viewed together, these approaches highlight how visual style is often prioritised, while cultural expression and the overall user experience receive less attention.

Packaging Development

The process involved testing multiple dielines and box forms while focusing on user experience. Different structures were explored to see how the packaging would open and be understood by the user. Some forms looked visually interesting but caused confusion in terms of how the box worked or how the product was accessed. These observations helped refine the structure toward something that was easier to understand and use.

Final Packaging System

The final outcome is a minimal matcha packaging system with a calm and controlled visual language. Soft beige and green tones keep the design natural and understated. Bold typography and clean layouts make the information easy to read. The hexagonal box and layered packaging provide a clear structure and help organise the product without adding unnecessary complexity.
